Overview
The town of Naivasha is located in Nakuru County, 92.8 kilometers (57.7 miles) northwest of Nairobi. At the 2019 census, the population has increased to over 198,000 from 1969 by a factor of 17 times. The lake that gives it its name is Lake Naivasha, which is where it is located. The Maasai word napsha, which means “that which heaves” and is a frequent Maasai term for bodies of water large enough to see wave action under windy or stormy conditions, is whence the name Naivasha originates. The British began to enunciate the Maasai name, and Naivasha developed. Literally, Lake Naivasha and Naivasha Town both refer to a lake.
